Chancellor Scholz’s Disappointing Silence on Human Rights During China Trip

Germany’s economic ties to China made it unsurprising that Chancellor Olaf Scholz did not prioritize human rights during his recent visit to China. Despite the Chinese government’s worsening human rights record, Scholz failed to publicly address these concerns, focusing instead on trade and foreign policy issues.

During his extended stay in China, Scholz engaged in discussions with top Chinese officials and business leaders, emphasizing trade and foreign policy while neglecting human rights issues. This approach contradicts Germany’s own strategy, which acknowledges China as a security threat and emphasizes values-driven relations.

Scholz missed an opportunity to steer Sino-German relations towards a more balanced and values-driven approach by failing to advocate for human rights during his visit. This disappointing silence undermines Germany’s long-term interests and the fundamental rights of individuals in China.
